Traces

GREG CORNELIUS

Greg was born and raised in Broken Hill and has lived in numerous towns and

cities across Australia, finally settling in Perth in 1995. This is the first time

Greg has ever shown his work.

Greg’s work is primarily concerned with memory (the power or process of

reproducing or recalling what has been learned and retained especially

through associative mechanisms Webster’s Dictionary). These recollections

come from within and are connected to feelings not understood by the

conscious mind. In a similar way the materials are selected using the same

criteria and have a history and drama contained within. The inherent collecting

and gathering is as much a part of the process as the work itself, which

reflects a correlation between the materials and the experienced memories.

STUART EARNSHAW

Born in Perth, Stuart is a painter, ceramicist and Teacher of Art. He has

developed a body of work over many years.

He has lived most of his life in WA, however spent 8 years teaching and

painting in London where he first discovered the anatomical illustrations of

Andreas Vesalius, a 16 th century Belgian physician and anatomist, which

provided a catalyst to develop a series of metaphors with which to explore the

layers of belief, faith, experiences and ideas. The themes within Stuart’s

paintings and sculptures explore the intuitive dissection of belief and essence;

thoughts around the two ‘domains of attention’ that we bring to the world; and

making sense of spirituality and belief.

.

Both Greg and Stuart are graduates of Curtin University, like-minded artists

and the best of friends.‘ Traces’ explores memories and belief. Received ideas and beliefs contribute

to the forms of attention we give to the world. This attention, along with our

experiences, leave certain traces, marks and impressions.
